Flake shaped magnetic fillers enable magnetically controlled superhydrophobicity on the surface of elastomers, allowing for rapid response with low amounts of plasticizers

Research Background and Material System

Magneto active elastomers (MAEs) are a type of composite material that can undergo deformation under an external magnetic field and thereby regulate surface morphology and wettability. They have attracted attention in the fields of adaptive coatings, microfluidics, and soft robotics. However, how to optimize its field induced surface response through formulation and filler design remains a challenge in this field. A recent study published in Polymers for Advanced Technologies systematically investigated the effects of spherical carbonyl iron particles and flake like iron particles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based MAEs on magnetic responsive wetting behavior, with variables including plasticizer content, filler concentration, and film thickness.

Key data and performance comparison

Research shows that particle morphology plays a decisive role in surface reconstruction.

. Compared with spherical fillers, sheet-like fillers can rapidly transition to a high adhesion superhydrophobic state at significantly lower plasticizer dosage (25 wt.%) and moderate magnetic field (400 mT); Under a magnetic field of 490 mT, the maximum water contact angle reached 162 °± 2 °. Mechanistically, the anisotropic demagnetization effect of sheet-like particles promotes their in-plane magnetization and parallel field alignment, forming obvious surface protrusions, thereby trapping air and stabilizing the Cassie Baxter wetting state. Under the action of a magnetic field, the surface roughness of sheet-like composite materials increases by 2-3 times compared to spherical systems, and is directly related to the increase in contact angle. In terms of stability, the sheet-like iron-based MAE exhibits better wetting time stability: the contact angle changes by less than 1 ° within 2.5 minutes under the maximum magnetic field; At the same time, a higher absolute energy storage modulus is obtained during the magnetic drive process. This means that the system balances mechanical response while achieving switchable surface functionality.

The significance of polymer additives and electronic and electrical materials

The “filler anisotropy” strategy proposed in this study does not rely on chemical modification, providing a new path for developing robust and magnetically switchable superhydrophobic surfaces.

. For the field of electronics and electrical engineering, this type of PDMS based magnetically active elastomer has potential reference value in packaging, encapsulation, and protective coating directions: switchable surface wettability helps to cope with environmental challenges such as humidity and condensation, while filler morphology design provides a means to adjust surface properties without changing the chemical system of the substrate. From the perspective of formulation design, sheet-like fillers can achieve rapid response at lower levels of plasticizer dosage, indicating that in engineering plastics and elastomers systems, the geometric shape and dispersion state of fillers may be more critical than simply increasing the filling amount. For electronic and electrical components that require long-term weather resistance and electrical performance stability, if such surface reconstruction materials are to be used in conjunction with stable systems such as antioxidants, their comprehensive performance under external field cycling, thermal aging, and electrical environments still needs to be further evaluated. The study also shows that the morphology control of fillers can be coordinated with the design of mechanical properties, providing a reference for multifunctional electronic and electrical protective materials.
