Magnetic polystyrene carrier immobilized lipase: high stability and easy recovery characteristics in esterification reaction

Tires and rubber

Research Background and Material Design

In high viscosity reaction media such as fatty acid esterification, the separation and recovery of catalysts have always been a difficult process. Magnetic carriers can achieve rapid separation of catalysts through external magnetic fields, simplifying biological processes and reducing costs. A recent study used magnetic polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer as a carrier to immobilize Antarctic Candida lipase B (CALB), systematically investigated the effect of particle morphology on immobilization parameters, and evaluated its catalytic performance in esterification reactions. In the study, polymer particles were prepared by changing the dilution degree of monomer mixtures to explore the relationship between particle morphology and immobilization parameters. This material design concept is similar to the morphology control of reinforcing fillers and polymer carriers in the rubber industry – the specific surface area and pore structure of particles directly affect the loading efficiency and dispersion state of active components.

Key data and catalytic performance

Among the prepared series of biocatalysts, BioS100 prepared from 100% diluted polymer showed outstanding performance: the immobilization yield reached 82.0%, and the esterification activity was 493.0 U g ¹. At all temperatures tested, the acid to ester conversion rate of free CALB was lower than that of heterogeneous biocatalysts, indicating that the presence of the carrier enhanced the thermal stability of the enzyme.

. This heterogeneous biocatalyst exhibits high conversion rates in the esterification reactions of palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid (all long-chain fatty acids). It is worth noting that BioS100 showed no decrease in the conversion rate of ethyl oleate in 10 consecutive esterification reactions, demonstrating good operational stability and easy recovery. Based on this, the study authors pointed out its potential for large-scale application.

Inspiration for the Polymer Additive Industry

Although the direct object of this study is biocatalytic materials, its carrier design and evaluation methods have reference value for the tire and rubber fields.

. Firstly, the preparation and recycling ideas of magnetic polymer carriers can provide reference for the design of loaded antioxidants and anti-aging agents in rubber additives – achieving sustained release and recycling of additives through carrier based methods, which is expected to reduce additive migration and environmental pollution. Secondly, the investigation of the relationship between particle morphology and immobilization efficiency in the study is consistent with the research logic on the dispersion and interfacial effects of reinforcing fillers such as white carbon black in rubber matrix: the particle size, porosity, and surface characteristics of the filler directly determine its reinforcement effect and the synergistic effect of the vulcanization system. In addition, the high conversion rate and thermal stability demonstrated in the esterification of long-chain fatty acids in this study suggest the potential application space of bio based processing aids in rubber mixing and vulcanization processes. For example, fatty acid ester compounds are often used as plasticizers or processing aids in rubber processing. If efficient and recyclable green synthesis is achieved through immobilized enzyme catalysis, it will help reduce energy consumption and waste emissions in the additive production process. The concept of magnetic recyclable catalysts also provides new ideas for the design of catalytic systems in the desulfurization or modification process of waste rubber in the field of tire retreading and recycling. Overall, although this study did not directly involve tire formulations or vulcanization processes, its data on polymer carrier morphology control, catalyst recovery, and continuous operational stability provide transferable materials science basis for the loading design and green manufacturing of rubber additives. It is worth paying attention to the adaptability of such magnetic biocatalysts in more complex rubber additive synthesis systems, as well as the compatibility performance between the carrier material and the rubber matrix.
