Nano silver/PHBHHx packaging film: how blending and surface coating morphology affect antibacterial properties and silver migration

包装料

Form determines function: Surface coating achieves antibacterial activity with lower silver content. In the field of food and daily chemical packaging, introducing nano silver (Ag NPs) into bioplastics to endow antibacterial activity is an important technological path for active packaging. However, the morphology of nanocomposites must meet two conditions simultaneously: allowing silver to effectively contact microorganisms to exert antibacterial effects, while controlling silver migration within regulatory safety limits. A study published in Packaging Technology and Science systematically compared the effects of bulk mixed and surface coated forms on film functionality and silver migration behavior using poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) as the matrix. Two preparation models were used in the study. In the blending model, nano silver is extruded and melted into PHBHHx, with addition amounts of 0.2 wt.% and 2.0 wt.%, and then molded into a film. In the surface coating model, the stable aqueous dispersion of PHBHHx coated silver nanoparticles (silver content 10 wt.% and 40 wt.%, particle size less than 300 nm) was prepared by micro lotion and solvent evaporation, and then 50 layers were coated on the extruded PHBHHx base film by ultrasonic spraying. The commercial spherical silver nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were used in the research institute, and the samples with and without PVP coating were compared.

Differences in Optical and Barrier Properties

Optical and SEM images show that the distribution of nanoparticles in both models is generally uniform, but there is a certain degree of agglomeration.

. Due to the higher absolute silver content, the blend film exhibits significant differences in color, opacity, and UV visible light transmittance compared to the surface coating film. In terms of barrier performance, the coating layer is not sufficient to affect the oxygen barrier properties, but the oxygen permeability coefficient of the blend film is reduced by 15% -31%. This result suggests that in packaging applications that require transparency, surface coating morphology has more advantages in optical performance; For structures with barrier requirements, blending morphology can bring certain improvements in oxygen barrier.

The difference between antibacterial activity and migration mechanism

The antibacterial test results showed a phenomenon opposite to the intuition of silver content: although the silver content was much lower, the surface coating film could still effectively inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, while the blended film did not show significant antibacterial performance.

. Researchers believe that this is closely related to the contact efficiency between silver and microorganisms in both forms, as well as the release mode of silver. To explain this difference, a detailed migration study was conducted using single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) in different food simulants (10 v/v% ethanol and 3 w/v% acetic acid). The results indicate that the migration mechanism of the surface coating model is rapid desorption and continuous dissolution, while the blending model is mainly characterized by slow diffusion. This mechanism difference means that the surface coating morphology can quickly release silver with antibacterial activity at the interface, while its total silver usage is lower; The silver in the blended form is wrapped by the matrix and diffuses slowly, making it difficult to form an effective antibacterial concentration in the short term.

Inspiration for polymer additives and packaging material design

The significance of this study for the packaging material industry lies in its consideration of the morphology design, functionality, and safety of nanocomposites within the same framework.

. For food contact active packaging, the antibacterial effect and migration safety are often mutually constrained: increasing the silver content may enhance antibacterial activity, but it may also bring the risk of migration exceeding the standard. This study indicates that antibacterial function can be achieved at lower silver content through surface coating morphology, and release behavior can be regulated through desorption dissolution mechanism, providing new ideas for formulation design. From the perspective of processing stability, the blending model relies on extrusion melt blending, which is mature and easy to scale up. However, the control of dispersion and agglomeration of nano silver in high-temperature processing is still crucial; The surface coating model involves the preparation of micro lotion and multiple spraying, and the process complexity is higher, but the utilization efficiency of silver is higher. There are trade-offs between the two paths, and researchers also point out that further optimizing these two methods is expected to improve processing flexibility and promote the implementation of safe active packaging applications. Against the backdrop of increasing emphasis on recycled materials and recyclable design, PHBHHx, as a biodegradable polyester, provides a candidate solution for biobased active packaging in combination with nano silver. However, the safety of recycling and regenerating materials containing nano silver films still needs to be evaluated in conjunction with migration data. In addition, how the antioxidant and processing stabilizer system in food contact scenarios can collaborate with nano silver antibacterial components to avoid oxidative degradation and discoloration during processing is also a concern in formula development. This study did not involve the specific effects of antioxidants or processing stabilizers, and the relevant conclusions need to be verified in subsequent work.
