Research Overview and Key Data
A study published in Packaging Technology and Science reported a novel dual functional smart membrane (AP/P @ LF/RCA), which is based on apple pectin (AP) and loaded with lactoferrin coated root bark nanoparticles (P @ LF, as antibacterial agent) and red cabbage anthocyanins (RCA, as color indicator) by flow casting method. Structural characterization confirms that P @ LF and RCA form a stable composite system with the AP matrix through hydrogen bonding, improving the crystallinity and thermal stability of the AP membrane. Performance testing shows that the water contact angle of the membrane has increased from 46.87 ° to 76.62 °, indicating enhanced hydrophobicity; The highest elongation at break is 40.67%, the tensile strength is 8.00 MPa, and the mechanical properties have been effectively improved. Antibacterial experiments have confirmed that the membrane exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The degradation experiment showed that the membrane achieved significant degradation within 15 days.
Performance of Preservation and Freshness Monitoring
In the preservation application of pork and cheese, AP/P @ LF/RCA-0.15 film can delay pH rise, inhibit bacterial growth, and achieve real-time visual monitoring of pork and cheese freshness through obvious color changes.
. Meanwhile, the film extended the shelf life of pork and cheese by 4 and 2 days respectively. Research has shown that this provides a convenient method for real-time and non-destructive monitoring of food quality, demonstrating great potential for application in the field of food preservation.
The significance of polymer additives and packaging materials industry
From the perspective of packaging materials, this study integrates biobased matrices, nano antibacterial agents, and natural pigment indicators into a single film system, providing a reference technical path for the formulation design of active and intelligent packaging.
. For food contact packaging, the integration of antibacterial function and freshness indicator function helps reduce reliance on independent labels or sensors and simplify packaging structure. In terms of processing stability, although this study did not directly involve antioxidants and other additives, pectin based biobased films also face issues of thermal oxidative aging and performance maintenance during casting and long-term use. The design ideas for processing stability and antioxidant systems may be borrowed from the engineering development of such degradable packaging. In addition, the significant degradation of the film within 15 days echoes the current focus on packaging end of pipe treatment issues for recycled materials and recyclable designs, providing data reference for the validation of the degradability of biobased packaging materials. Overall, this work demonstrates the feasibility of functional packaging films in food preservation and quality monitoring, and provides a research case for the selection and collaboration of functional components in packaging material formulations.
