AGY announced that the glass fiber yarn produced at its Aiken factory in South Carolina, USA, will be used as the base reinforcement material for Serge Ferrari Group’s Tenseo Xtrem GF 7000 composite membrane, which has been applied to the newly installed roof at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. This permanent roof replaces the old membrane structure destroyed by Hurricane Milton in October 2024, allowing the Tampa Bay Rays to return to the stadium at the opening of the 2026 Major League Baseball season. The new roof consists of 24 semi transparent composite membrane panels, covering an area of approximately 45000 square meters (nearly 485000 square feet). Each membrane board is approximately 330 feet long and weighs around 5000 pounds (2268 kilograms). Tenseo Xtrem GF 7000 is a high-performance building membrane material composed of woven glass fiber fabric coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and sealed with Serge Ferrari’s Pro Shield Max fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) surface treatment. AGY’s special glass fiber yarns form the structural foundation of woven fabrics, providing the required strength, dimensional stability, and durability for large permanent tensile structures.
Processing Chain and Performance Requirements
This project has put forward exceptionally urgent requirements for engineering, manufacturing, and installation cycles.
. Normally, a permanent roof of this size may take several years to complete, but the final membrane panels were secured in advance in November 2025, and the final tensioning and sealing work continued until early December, buying time for the renovation of the stadium interior and the team’s return. The membrane material is manufactured by Serge Ferrari Group’s factory in Germany and then transported to Enclos Tensile Structures for processing and assembly. During the production process, Serge Ferrari weaves glass fiber yarn into fabric, applies PTFE coating, and seals it with specialized FEP surface treatment. The finished surface provides waterproof, durable, and long-term aesthetic performance, while allowing rainwater to naturally remove roof dirt. Although the new roof is visually similar to the original roof, its engineering has been modernized for stronger winds, severe storms, and updated safety requirements. The expected service life of the completed membrane structure roof exceeds 20 years, aiming to improve the toughness of the stadium and reduce long-term maintenance needs. Patrick Hunter, Chief Business Officer and President of AGY, stated that this project demonstrates how advanced fiberglass yarns enable composite systems to operate reliably under harsh structural, environmental, and weather conditions.
Significance for the fiber and fabric, as well as polymer additives industry
From the perspective of the fiber and fabric column, this case demonstrates the complete chain of high-performance glass fibers forming composite membrane materials for construction through weaving, coating, and surface treatment after spinning and fiber processing.
. The strength, dimensional stability, and durability of glass fiber yarn as a reinforcing skeleton directly determine the reliability of large-scale tensioned membrane structures in long-term outdoor service. PTFE coating and FEP surface treatment undertake waterproof, weather resistant, and self-cleaning functions, which is consistent with the focus on weather stability and functional finishing in the field of fibers and fabrics. For the polymer additive industry, although this source does not directly mention the specific use of antioxidants or weather stabilizers, the weather stability of the coating and surface treatment system of the film material is one of the key factors to ensure a service life of more than 20 years when it is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, moisture, and temperature changes outdoors for a long time. Antioxidants and weather resistant stabilizers are commonly used in the spinning, weaving, and coating processes of fiber-reinforced fabrics to protect the polymer matrix from thermal and photo oxidative aging, thereby maintaining the mechanical properties and appearance of the composite material. The engineering practice of this project has shown that large-scale permanent tensioning structures have a clear demand for the synergistic weather resistance performance of fiber-reinforced materials and polymer coatings, and also provide a reference for the application of functional additives in the fields of fibers and fabrics.
