Fe3O4 polymer ionic liquid crystal composite material enhances the settling stability of magnetorheological fluid

Research Overview

A study published in Polymers for Advanced Technologies used self-assembly to combine superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with polymeric ionic liquid crystals (PILCs) to prepare Fe3O4 PILCs composite materials, which were then dispersed and used in magnetorheological (MR) fluids. The chemical structure, liquid crystal behavior, and magnetic properties of the composite material were characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, SEM, DSC, POM, XRD, and VSM.

Key Performance and Data

Under the influence of an external magnetic field, the magneto rheological fluid based on Fe3O4 PILCs exhibits typical Bingham flow characteristics.

. The shear stress, yield stress, and viscoelastic storage modulus all strongly depend on the magnetic field strength. Within the scope of this study, the magnetorheological fluid based on 15 wt.% Fe3O4 PILC-3 exhibited the best performance under an external magnetic field of 100 mT. It is worth noting that under the same magnetic field strength, as the content of mesoporous elements increases, the dynamic yield stress and storage modulus of the magnetorheological fluid also increase. This composition dependent enhancement effect is consistent with the coupling effect between field responsive Fe3O4 particles and ordered mesoporous PILCs. In addition, due to the coating of long-chain liquid crystal polymers on the surface of magnetic particles, the settling stability of Fe3O4 PILCs based magnetorheological fluids is significantly improved, with a maximum settling ratio of 72% during settling.

Significance for the polymer additive industry

This study provides new ideas for the design of functional composite materials in the field of electronics and electrical engineering.

. Magnetorheological fluids have potential applications in damping, transmission, and control components, and settlement stability has long been an important factor restricting their engineering. By surface coating magnetic particles with long-chain liquid crystal polymers, the stability of the dispersion system can be improved without relying on traditional antioxidants or flame retardant systems. This suggests that polymer surface modification and interface coupling strategies are also worthy of attention in engineering plastics and packaging materials for electronic and electrical applications. For electronic and electrical components that require long-term weather stability and electrical performance stability, the ordered interaction between fillers and substrates may become a key path to improving overall performance. Although this study focuses on magnetorheological fluids, its methods for polymer liquid crystal coating, particle dispersion, and settling control can provide reference for surface engineering of functional fillers in electronic and electrical materials.
