Molex has launched a 16 core beam extender optical connector called VersaBeam Mini, aimed at AI and ultra large scale data centers, with the goal of increasing fiber density in limited spaces. This product combines extremely small external dimensions with Molex’s beam expanding optics (EBO) technology to address the constraints of high-density systems in terms of space, heat dissipation, and maintainability. From the parameters, the VersaBeam Mini integrates 16 cores within a footprint of 3.5 × 9mm, achieving a density three times that of the Molex VersaBeam 16 connection solution. The company claims that this format can support up to 3456 cores in a standard 1RU panel. The product is aimed at applications such as co packaged optics, optical backplanes, and front panel switches, where available panel and chassis space is becoming increasingly scarce.
16 core granularity reduces the impact range of faults
Molex also emphasizes that using 16 cores as the granularity can reduce the “explosion radius” to one ninth of the original, and technicians can isolate, modify, or hot plug individual 16 channel links without affecting larger range connections.
. The optional overall insertion function allows up to nine VersaBeam Mini connectors, or 144 cores, to be inserted at once, with the aim of accelerating initial rack installation while retaining finer grained maintainability in the future.
Trevor Smith, General Manager of Molex’s Optical Connectivity Business, stated that with the exponential growth of single rack optical density, network architects have encountered physical hard constraints in both scale up GPU clusters and scale out network architectures.
; The VersaBeam Mini combines VSFF footprint with zero contact EBO technology to reduce pollution risks, minimize downtime, and reduce the impact of faults without relying on specialized technical expertise.
Insert Design and Automated Assembly
VersaBeam Mini adopts a groove based 3M EBO insert design, eliminating guide pins and guide holes.
. Molex claims that this makes the connector more suitable for robot picking and placing equipment, and may reduce the number of parts and bill of materials costs. The beam expansion design reduces sensitivity to dust and debris between connectors, and Molex claims that deployment, inspection, and maintenance costs can be reduced by up to 85%. The connector also has built-in laser eye safety features, aimed at technicians who perform daily maintenance or upgrades. In terms of commercialization pace, the limited customer sample delivery plan is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2026, and mass production is planned for the first half of 2027. Molex will also showcase the VersaBeam Mini at ECOC 2026 in Malaga, Spain, along with co packaged optics, optical path switching, and external laser source technology.
Significance for the polymer additive industry
From the perspective of electronic and electrical materials, the value of such high-density optical connectors is not only in optical design, but also depends on whether the shell, plug peripheral structural components, and panel mounting parts can maintain dimensional stability and reliable insulation in a smaller space.
. After the miniaturization of connectors, engineering plastics need to balance thin-walled molding, heat resistance, and long-term electrical stability. The flame retardant system also needs to meet the basic safety requirements of electronic and electrical components. For material formulation design near data centers and network equipment supply chains, weather stability and antioxidant systems are equally important: internal temperature rise, long-term power on, and external environmental changes can accelerate the aging of polymer materials, affecting the size retention and insertion and removal life of structural components such as buckles and shells. The trend of “less space carrying more channels” reflected by VersaBeam Mini means that connector material suppliers need to collaborate with processing and testing processes to strike a balance between flame retardancy, weather stability, and antioxidant selection to support the long-term reliability of high-density electronic and electrical hardware.
